I've recently moved over to Melbourne to work on some kids show about a boy and his ass who hang out and have adventures. It's pretty goofy but it's good to work in a studio with some old friends oh and it pays the billz. Last years work was a little light so a long contract is what I need.

Anyway I made this for the loop de loop screening

I was finally able to attend a loop de loop since it's screens here in Melbourne. Oh and it actually won the best loop for the month which was nice. I also got to meet a whole bunch of rad animators which was fun.

I liked the theme of black and white. It brings up some new rule I made for myself and that is to never use straight black and white always use slightly off blacks and whites. The reason being that black and white are your 2 major colours that draw in your eye so by saving true black and white and using it only on specific things you have more control of your image focus. Also not using true blacks and whites and using off colours means the textures and lighting shows up nicer. You can also play with warm blacks and whites or cool blacks and whites and mix the 2 in the same image (eg skin is warm clothes are cold).

The other little trick I tried out on this short loop was the idea of using shapes to plan my inbetweens, secondary movement and keep a consistent volume.

Since the shapes are quite simple in Toonboom and flash with the onion skinning on you can see quite easy how everything is travelling through nice arcs and how your spacing is working.

The tradeoff is that you are adding another pass to your animation which would slow you down a bit. So I think I would only use this technique for specific shots rather than for an entire film.

You also got to watch that you don't lose the energy of your original drawings by being to mathematical like this. So you got to not blindly follow and trace the circles and make sure the lines you draw have power and guts to them.

Anyway that's the fun of loopdeloops. Trying out ideas and being pretty relaxed about it. I've actually got a whole folder of unfinished loops of ideas that got out of hand or that I ended up not feeling.

At the moment I'm storyboarding and planning a new video clip for a pretty awesome track and slowly working away at a Manly Show comic as well as occasionally taking turns updating that tumblr. I've also got another commercial job to do on the side soon as well. So that's what is up with me.

Stay cool blog, we'll talk againmrmerkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00979216894917693956noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29406115.post-25385746533220414132013-02-08T08:49:00.000+08:002013-02-08T08:49:01.309+08:00Hey girlSo unfortunately I wasn't able to raise enough money for some short movies for the "Manly Show" but I've been kicking around some ideas an old one and a new one.

This is a character test for the new idea

and here's the step by step making of

Hopefully I can finish it in less than 5 years unlike my other film Porcelain.
It will also have less psychic powers and tentacles and instead have emotions and feelings.

I'm liking using the extra lines for expressions but not 100% happy with my line work (which was always going to be rough). I might experiment with no outlines (although I feel that's a little played out now) or textured lines and either pushing a more stylised face or trying a few more realistic faces.

I really want to capture a 30+ older and more ordinary look as I want to tell a story about people in this age group. Drawing on my own experiences and friends.

It's still early days to be talking about the story I'm just trying to get a few of the characters together and then let them affect some of the scripts choices.

Well I'll talk about this and the other idea more when there's stuff to show.

As for the fate of the "Manly Show" well we won't be making the films but the tumblr is still a go.

I made an animated gif the other day that was pretty coolmrmerkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00979216894917693956noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29406115.post-80826592659346172702012-10-21T20:05:00.000+08:002012-10-21T21:55:11.433+08:0024hr comic day 2012Another year another fantastic venue and turn out for the 24 hour comic challenge in Perth.

A twist on this years challenge we had to use the name of a song to inspire our comics. "I'm deranged" by David Bowie from the Lost Highway soundtrack was my ear worm for that morning

<a href="http://www.scribd.com/doc/110667943/Deranged-24hr-Comic-Day-2012" style="display: inline !important; font-family: Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 14px; margin: 12px auto 6px;" title="View "Deranged" 24hr Comic Day 2012 on Scribd">Deranged 24hr Comic Day 2012

What did you think? I was pretty happy with it. I enjoyed the freedom of not taking it too seriously and just having fun drawing. I even got one of the Manly Show super buff dudes in there. (I love that photo realistic picture of me doing the 24hr comic that Christien drew)

I drew this on glossy A5 paper (I guillotined and halved A4 sheets before the event) as I knew that paper likes ink pens. I wore my glove that I have for my cintiq as I knew my hand would be a bit grippy on the gloss paper. I loosely pencilled it with a H pencil. I found the faster and looser I drew the better to ink from. My pens were a small, a mid and a brush pen. I tried to use the different thicknesses to give the scene depth. I also had 2 different grey markers, a warm and a cool grey. I tried to use the different colours to separate the characters from the background. Occasionally I'd mix up the colours due to tiredness.

Working smaller I was able to produce more pages faster and starting from 10am I was able to have all my pages done by 3am the next day. This is the first time I've managed to finish with time to spare. I also felt I was able to keep the drawings pretty consistent I may have stopped drawing detailed trees for awhile but the character work I was happy with the whole way through.

This character was based on a cultural statue I saw while I was over in Kuching last month. It had a cat that looks pretty much like how I've drawn him being attacked by a similar styled dog/dragon. I wasn't allowed to take photos in the museum but I drew these while I was over there.

This guy is super fun to draw and the 24 hour challenge gave me an opportunity to bring him to life. That's why these events are so much fun. They just force work out of you.

Well another 24 hour comic done. Super extreme thanks to Chris Maximum Markle for organizing it again.

The next thing coming up in a few weeks the 48hr animation challenge!!!! Man I must hate sleeping.

I also need to find a job at some point. My freelancing is only just keeping the wolf at bay. Such is my glorious life as an artist haha

Sorry for the lack of updates here but keep reading the Manly Show. Christien has been drawing up a storm there that keeps challenging me to draw men with the shortest shorts and the largest nipples... heh. Seriously check it. It's the best website in the world!!mrmerkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00979216894917693956noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29406115.post-4136192853557674802012-07-19T14:21:00.000+08:002012-08-06T16:58:04.115+08:00SpidermanI watched Spiderman on Tuesday and just seeing him move and swing through the city inspired me to draw.

My first sketch I did while out at the Zoo
After a few scribbles I felt like doing a simple fun animation.
I really want to do more with Spiderman. I also just watched the latest Batman so maybe I'll do something with him.

Oh as for my last post on what happened with my oil painting, there was a lot of swearing and cursing as things stopped working out but I did complete the painting. I'll update that soon. Even though the painting is hanging on the wall I might touch up a few areas before it's finished finished.
mrmerkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00979216894917693956noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29406115.post-58440231117457198882012-06-09T10:49:00.000+08:002012-08-06T17:02:11.666+08:00Mr Gough in WinterlandThis post will be about a painting I'm working on.

So far I have this scribble

So this above drawing was based on an earlier sketch that I unearthed while I've been moving house

I had been doing a few sketches in photoshop trying to plan out the image but nothing really felt that great. Like the Mr Gough world that exists in my head so it was great to come across this image.

Here are some of the earlier photoshop sketches. You'll notice the fishing monster was the one thing I was happy with.

The second one I was almost ok with. Having a Mr Gough floating in ice. I did like the tree zombies I created but I couldn't work them into the new image.

Oh I should give a little backstory. Mr Gough was a small little comic that was born in my sketch book. I really liked it and I ended up making an animated short with him. The short won quite a few awards so he's stayed a favourite character of mine. He usually makes cameos in my other films as well.

I added in the little orange monster from the short on top of the round trees. No Monkeybears though

So I tweaked and changed that original drawing in photoshop but it's going to become a painting so this is how I'm transferring the image onto the canvas.

After printing the image I attached one of the sides to the canvas turned the image over and covered the back with black charcoal

I then folded over the paper over the canvas

Then using a blunt pencil I traced over the lines

This hurts my hand as I have to draw without leaning on the page. When I finish (I haven't yet) tracing all the lines I can fold back the paper and see the image has been transferred. Here's what it looks like so far

I'll spray that with some fixative to hold the charcoal and then it will be time to begin the under painting (at least I think that's what I'm doing)

Ok so here's the finished transfer

Which is pretty close to the original drawing. The paper buckled a bit and moved some of the drawing around but nothing too drastic.

So now I'm beginning to tone the image. Because it's winter I'm using blue tone for my under paint. Actually I'm not sure if this is really "under painting" much like when a client asks if we could "storyboard" the idea when he really means brainstorm the idea or calling a corporate video a documentary (my favourite term misuse).

I'm trying to work really light and that means using more turps than oil paint. I noticed that some of the transfered areas aren't dark enough for me to see details (such as the tree behind the rock on the right) and I'll need to let the oils dry a bit and maybe pencil the lines a bit darker.

Will oils you have to build up the paint a bit otherwise you'll have the white of the canvas showing through and that looks crappy. This canvas I'm using is a bit iffy as well. Some areas were hard and it was repelling the paint a bit.

Anyway still a heap of stuff to do. I'm also trying to jump between this, some writing and some flash work. This tree I've been slowly working on for a week or so now (I get distracted too easily these days)

Here's the final painting. It took awhile to get teh colours I wanted and there's probably a few colour's I'd like to photoshop change haha but that's the fun of non digtal art. The rawness of it all

If you haven't seen it yet this is my new film I was talking about yesterday. The guidelines of the film was that we had to incorporate this character...

and use a section out of a supplied music track by Pippin Kenworthy.

I was tempted to use the more abstract heavy part of the track at the start but I really loved the melancholy section in the middle. As I was working on the film listening to the track over and over I heard the whistles blowing at the end which made me think of the Chuck Jones sheepdog shorts. So that's why the ending is what it is. There's also 2 possible ways to read what the ending is which is something I quite like.

Anyway here are my early sketches and thumbnails

This was the first drawing of the wolf I did. I loved the simplicity of the drawing style. For some reason I ended up shrinking the head and making him more wolf like. I wish I kept those fangs. I think everything changed when I did that shot of him eating lamb chops.

These are my thumbnails of the film. I kept reasonably close to them except for the ending

In the ending the sheep dog and the wolf were going to be bros and the sheep dog just comes over bringing a coffee/tea and he just consoles the wolf. The deadline for the entry was getting really close and that whole handing over the coffee thing was going to be a bit tricky so I skipped that. Also because of how I framed the shot the hand on the back didn't look great so the sheep dogs hand went on the wolfs hand but then that looked like something else and since that made me laugh that's why the ending is what it is.

Something you may have missed is that the wolf goes to work and comes home with a bloody sheep in the back of the car. So with the ending there's 2 possible things, either what most people will see is the sheep dog is making a pass at the wolf or the other ending is that the sheep dog has finally caught the wolf who's been killing all the sheep.

So that's the skinny about my 'Lonely Wolf' short film. It ended up winning an award at the competition I entered it in. It picked up the prize for "outstanding animation" and won me a new wacom. Roseline also won an award for story I think although it might have been illustration and she won vouchers for art supplies. Since I have a cintiq and Rose needs to update her intous 2 we just switched our prizes. I'm going to buy me some more oil paints!!!

Well there's another film that should be on the mondo channel soon that I worked on called "Probed". I'm not sure when that is going to be online but I'll do another post when it ismrmerkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00979216894917693956noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29406115.post-74356435741439412652012-04-12T14:24:00.000+08:002012-04-12T14:24:11.058+08:00Lonely Wolf StillsWell I made a new film and it should be screening tonight as part of Animators Hour on the Northbridge Piazza Super Screen. I'll also be putting the film on my Youtube channel tomorrow morning.

It's a very short film as it was only meant to be 30seconds and it had to use the music provided but I crammed it with as much stuff as possible... maybe too much.

Anyway here are some stills

It felt like a return to the original sort of short films I used to make before I started earning money working on other peoples shows and other commercial jobs. Those were some fun times but not really something I can afford to do as much as I could when I was younger.

Technical stuff, the backgrounds were done in photoshop, the animation was done in toonboom and grading added in after effects. I tried to approach this with as little animation as possible and more focusing on the illustrations carrying the film. I tried to have a lot of foreground, midground, midback, farback, layout set ups as well as a slight camera hand held drift. Tell me if it works tomorrow

The Animators hour is here (see below) and it starts at 8:30pm - 9:30pm

I've heard there might even be something new from Roseline in it :)mrmerkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00979216894917693956noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29406115.post-62319627008189377322012-03-26T12:38:00.000+08:002012-03-26T12:38:02.344+08:00Liquid loopHere's my loop submission for this months loopdeloop

I've been reading a bunch of X-men comics lately and I'm pretty sure you can tell by looking at this haha

It wasn't my initial idea for this theme. I just woke up one morning and just started pressing random buttons on Garageband ipad and came up with this goofy song loop. I then animated loosely based on/inspired by the music straight ahead in toonboom animate.

It turned out to be a fun experiment animating 2d effects. When I was animating the effects I tried to feel the effect more than to plan it out. I tried to force myself to draw big confident strokes and solid shapes and not over work the drawing.

The line I used for this was a square brush with pressure. I really love the feel of that line! It feels like paints or ink and it's great to work really bold and messy.

The character design I wanted to keep really pulpy with flat colours and black. I worked in shapes and details that would help define limbs as I knew there was going to be that rotation but also so you can see what's going on when she gets really small in the background.

You can head over here and give it some star ratings today and tomorrow... 350 star ratings so I can win hahaha

You definitely should head to the website though and check out the loops this month there's been over 50 submissions and lots and lots of really great ones.

http://www.loopdeloop.org/

I really would have loved to go to the screening for this one. Curse my no where near Melbourneness!!!

Oh I should also say I finished another film for a competition on Saturday. I can't wait to show that one it's pretty fun!mrmerkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00979216894917693956noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29406115.post-58209442780284492642012-03-12T11:40:00.000+08:002012-03-14T23:03:54.020+08:00New background workI've been doing a bunch of backgrounds in photoshop lately here's some from an unreleased film that was finished last week.

This is a working progress for a short animation (keeping this secret just in case I don't finish it)

That floor texture I made for my film Porcelain that I'm constantly adjusting and recolouring to reuse every time there's a wooden floor. I also have some glass textures I made for windows from Porcelain that I also reuse heavily.

This WIP background is for an animation pitch I'm working on set in my hometown forests

I'll try to update this background every day until I finish it. I thought it was good to show at this stage as you can see my layout lines and layer breakdowns (different colours represent different layers). This was something of a style experiment I might simplify everything once I do a detailed study. The layout is pretty boring but when I put the two characters in and fire up the depth of field effects it should look ok.

Oh here's an old background I did for Roseline's loop de loop that has been sitting in my draft posts for forever.

UPDATE 13th of March

So I sketched out the main midground section which the characters interact with

after doing the sketch it was like "...ok now how the heck am I supposed to colour that???"

This is what I have done so far and I'll continue it tomorrow. I guess it will have a slight water colour feel to it. I'm not sure. Today I like it and think it will work

UPDATE 14th of March

Ok this is pretty much done and I'm not completely happy with it but for a first style test it will do

There's things about the colouring I really like. Such as the little red and yellow scattered leaves I think offset the pallet just enough so it isn't boring. The balancing of detail and space are ok but not really that imaginative. I think the default way I draw is looking slightly down so for my next tests I really should play with my camera angles a bit. I also want to push things and also simplify and simplify! This was a test where I'm just getting a feel for the environment but now its time to look at it with my producers hat on and see how to approach this better.

I might do an update tomorrow where I'll add in the charactersmrmerkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00979216894917693956noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29406115.post-82343734684912189532012-02-26T08:10:00.000+08:002012-02-26T08:10:30.127+08:00Rob Twizz - Milfs ft. Bizarre of D12 (making of)Well here's the videoclip I've been working on for the last couple of months that I made for Rob Twizz

So a little bit about the production and I'll begin with the technical aspects. I storyboarded the clip in Toonboom Storyboard pro, did the backgrounds in photoshop, animated it in Toonboom Animate pro and graded it in After Effects.

Now when I say "storyboarded" I really animated it as you can see
This probably wasn't that bright as it pretty much doubled the amount of work I had to do. I originally thought that the art I exported from Storyboard would import into Animate as vectors and that it would have layers but it turns out that it was the next version of 'Storyboard' that did that and that version was an extra $400+ LE SIGH!!

I think this is the problem of approaching a board as an animator and just working straight ahead in the timeline view where I could see the entire song. It's not a bad way of working for a music clip but I could have done things simpler and just had A and B poses and not spent time doing things like lipsync.

I did thumb out my shots (in an only Tim can understand these scribbles sort of way) but I've always wanted to do that professional wall of postit notes. Postit note walls look so pretty

(This is the Bizarre take off and flipmo scene to the child care)

I should also say this was my first time using Storyboard and it's a pretty great program. It's as straight forward as you can get. It does help though at the start to customise the shortcuts to what you want or what you're used to.

Planning what was going to happen in the clip though was tough mostly because I was struggling with ... I guess a moral balance. I wanted to take this clip on because it was super pulpy and that would give me a lot more freedom with the animation but at the same point I want my partner and my female friends to also enjoy it. A favourite director, Hiroyuki Imaishi, once wrote that there is nothing worse than only going halfway and that he'd rather go too far than to only go halfway with his work. So that is a quote that I always have in the back of my mind, I didn't want to pussy out but I did want that female audience so I had to make up some ground rules.

1. The women must never look like they are in situations against their will and in most cases initiating the situation
2. The design of the women must look unique and have a little thought into who they are. They must look like real characters not something from DC comics

There were some other rules but there's a few contradictions that I made haha. Oh another thing is there is no female nudity there's actually some male nudity. A couple of penis and ass shots but no one has spotted that haha. Oh one of the random comments I got on my art facebook page was from a wonderful girl who wrote

"Glad i found you, Love your art work on the Milfs video ^_^ to awesome had to find you and show support"

That to me felt like I achieved my goal. That I had hit my mark. I should point out however after the video was released there were 2 almost instantaneous dislikes on youtube, no bad comments but those 2 dislikes made me feel like I dropped the ball. So it was great to receive that comment a few days later.

Anyway I've jumped a little ahead here but I should mention the design of everything. The design did happen as I was storyboarding so my post is still sort of in order.

The sketch of R Twizz, the milf and the kid is what gave me a direction with how I was going to approach the whole clip. I thought it was pretty wrong and hilarious.

When I finished my film Porcelain someone challenged me that it was a little too 'fanime' that they'd be more interested in seeing what my own style was. So I started trying to draw every day and try and find and develop what I was comfortable with... I still am not really sure what my style is and to be honest all I think I ended up doing was adding on more influences (Robert Valley, Scott C, Kate Beaton and the most influential Yasuo Otsuka Lupin designs) onto my drawing style. I am developing something I think though.

This is the first film I made to test my new drawing style

This was done a while before I was even offered the videoclip job but I did like the drawing and animation style. Mixing solid strong poses with rubber hose animation, modulating frame rates and photoshop painted backgrounds. I've been developing and pushing this style a bit though the loopdeloop competitions but it was time to give it a serious go and this videoclip was my chance to try it professionally.

With the background art I wanted to be a bit more expressionistic and the first few shots that I did had very little detail and just painted mess but somewhere along the line I fell back into my usual style of lots of little details. That cost me so much time and effort. I'm happy with the results but it really did add 4 extra weeks onto my production. So need to streamline my background work and not get so worn out by it.

This background that I made a night and day version for was my attempt at doing those old cartoon network style backgrounds. I'm actually a bit over this sort of stuff haha so I'm not sure why I wanted to do it. It was just what I pictured in my brain when I was thinking of a suburban neighbourhood with a lot of desperate house wives.

This background looks a little plain without the mothers and Bizarre in it but I tried a trick on this one that worked pretty well. I duplicated the top half of the childcare and then flipped it and overlayed and blended it on the ground as a slight reflection. It is a simple trick but it's a good one

I posted this before but this was the first colour test for everything. The R-Twizz colours where based on a photo he sent and I just eye dropped the image. They were a little quirky with shades of pink, blue and purple. Cool sort of colours. Because of that I tried to base all my colour choices on a cool pallet.

I recommend when trying out colours to work really rough and try out all stupid ideas. Do have a goal but don't be too literal. Don't think apple red, tree brown, leaves green but think of the mood/feeling you are trying to create and know that your animation is going to go on top of it so you want everything working together not a whole bunch of individual items.

This image I think is my most complex and I had to grade it in After Effects to simple and blur out areas and blend the colours a bit more. There's some cool leading shapes/lines in that pic like how the pictures are staggered. It leads your eye to where I want it to be. Once again tricks like these are needed due to the nature of how quick these shots move also it's pretty pleasing on the eye

Now due to balancing other work, the time I spent on the backgrounds and animating in Storyboard pro instead of Animate and really needing to get this clip done (I kept having to push back when it would be done by) I had to reluctantly call in some help to trace, clean up and colour. Luckily I have some talented people to work with who even more luckily for me were free.

Roseline Lau my wonderful partner took on the first scene and the cookies scene she also helped me bounce ideas back and forth and it was good to have her knee jerk response to some of the ideas.

Dean Swanton who me and him go way back (to the first cartoons I ever produced) took on a whole bunch of scenes because he's awesome and super crazy fast. Mostly he did all the scenes of Bizarre but he also did that shot of the milf with the cake mix.

Christien Clegg another friend who's worked with me on a few short animations before had some horrible scenes of a certain American political lady that he had to redraw and ended up adding even more impact (haha) to the animation. He also did the appearing in the church shot where R-Twizz's face turns into a certain wedding crasher celebrity. It was great to have his drawings in this as I love his style.

Finally my last friend who helped me out was Jamie Anderson who took on the chatting up the donkey to ridding the donkey like a crazy person scenes. We worked next to each other on a tv animation (pixel pinkie) where we used to draw on our notepads coming up with a whole bunch of extreme and different expressions so I thought he'd be best at taking on the drunk face (that pic above). Jamies line work was probably the best out of all of us due to his many years producing his webcomic...and I made it all wavy in after effects so you can't tell (TAKE THAT JAMIE HAHAHA ...I'm really sorry). Oh and check out the crowd drawing he did for the donkey riding scene

click to make bigger

It was great working with these guys and even though it was mostly clean up they did bring their own style to clip and that makes me super happy. I hate working on productions where they try to stamp that out. I'd rather anything I produce to show the individual artists handwork.

With the animation (I know I'm all over the place here) I really tried to push the drawings to make the pose sell 90% of the animation. To jam it full of character and to not be bland. I still feel due to working commercially (having to scale back a lot of my stuff) and not putting enough time into developing my drawing skills my drawings are still a bit too conservative and held back. I still have so much more room to push the drawings more than I have.

I've always wanted my drawing/animation style to reach the level of Chuck Jones/Ken Harris stuff. Strong amazing poses with absolutely perfect expressions. From my studies of their works it really comes down to the importance of your line. Every line must convey the weight and strength of the pose and like the backgrounds it must be part of the pose not an individual useless line. Well that's the theory.

This sequence of the run take off I think was the closest to what I was trying to achieve. I'm pretty sure this was inspired by the dumb sonic running meme that was happening at the time.

(Antic pull back to explode forward. Finding that timing sweet spot for this is always the hardest.)

The video did ok on R-Twizz's channel nearly 5,000 views and I got a couple of views on my youtube just over 2,000 (I made $4 off the adds haha profit) and there's a new clip for me to do so I'll be posting about that one in a month. (In case you were wondering, I'm currently producing an animated short about aliens that break in and probe a guy for fun).

All in all I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I've had some nice feedback on this and my friends who worked on it actually enjoyed working in this style (or at least said they did haha). I do hope I can find a way to leave the horrible unfun world of nested symbol flash animation and make traditional fun hand drawn cartoons that embrace the fact that they are hand drawn.
hahaha mannnnn I've had a crazy hard week that is now going into the weekend. I'm still working on this videoclip which is taking longer than I would like.
My kitchen ceiling just gave way. My brother (that dude in the photo) and I were trying pretty hard to save it but it was a lost cause. I did manage to do a last minute dash to save a bowl of fruit but all my cereal (that everyone keeps telling me to put away) is pretty much written off. There's a thick layer of dust all through the house but we did manage to move all the ceiling pieces outside. We'll have to get someone in to fix it next week. Of course it being so close to christmas we shouldn't have a problem surely???

Sigh...

I did do some scribbly ipad paintings this week. They're ok, nothing that special but it was a nice waste of time to get my mind off things for a while

Speaking of some good time wasting I've been catching up on some comics. I really enjoyed the Marvel 'Fear Itself" crossover. A surprisingly great story that focused more on the characters and how they reacted to the disaster(s) than actually being about fighting the disaster. Some of the issues were even just the heads of the characters just talking about what happend, which I thought was pretty ballsy. I think one of the architects of this crossover was the guy behind Secret Wars and that is possibly my most favourite crossover (Doom rules ballz in that). Oh and the art in the 'Fear itself' series was really high across all the issues. I don't think there was an issue I didn't care for art wise. The few issues Chris Bachalo did were my highlights

I have been trying to read these new DC 52 comics but mannn they are not as fun. Some of the issues are ok in a pulpy comic sort of way but I don't know some of the writing is a bit iffy. The Green Arrow comic tries to stay relevant by adding in mentions to youtube and other pop culture sort of things but they do it in an awfully ham fisted way like they really don't get it. What was great about a couple of the Marvel comics was how they used twitter tweets in the story. It gave a feel of the public mood and it fit quite nicely into the comic narration box style format. I did find it funny instead of running for their lives they were tweeting what was going on although that's probably how it would play out. There were some things I liked in this new DC 52 like Greg Capallo's art on Batman. I used to love his work on Spawn when I was a kid. This work on Batman seems a lot cleaner/clearer and more focused. I also love the work on the controversial Catwomen comics. The dude drawing that draws great expressions it reminds me of Neal Adams stuff.

Ha that's enough comic nerding for now. I think it's time to call it a night and check what those crazy SAMCRO dudes are up to in Sons of Anarchy. Last time I saw them it wasn't looking good.mrmerkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00979216894917693956noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29406115.post-39323098582047098162011-12-04T12:44:00.001+08:002011-12-04T13:28:19.669+08:00Loop de loop: CondomsI've been getting around to doing a quick post on my latest loopdeloop entry that I surprisingly won a shared runner up on. This loopdeloop theme was Condoms to coincide with world aids day.

You should definitely check out the winning entry by Daniel and Marta's one who also was a runner up. Oh and Dean's one of messed up madness haha

This be my film though

Here's my animation frames

I actually was using my cintiq as a light table for this one. I created a new folder and opened it up and expanded it so my screen was white. I have a couple light tables but they've got a bunch of stuff on them and I was feeling pretty lazy that day haha.

I can't say I was completely happy with how this one turned out as it wasn't exactly how it was in my head, which was a lowfi, interpretive dance, theatre play sort of like the one in The Big Lebowski. After the curtain closes there was going to be a shot of the actor up close super detailed smoking a cigarette. The stage hand comes up and asks the actor “are you ready to go again?” he replies “si”

Mannn that after effects created spotlight was terrible haha! It was done really late at night and I forgot to mask the stage lights so they're in shadows. Oh and that curtain opens with like 1 inbetween and I reused it for the close despite that they should be the complete opposite in how they move haha. I was so not into animating it at this point. There was also meant to be some large sperms on sticks that were meant to move up and down in the background when he was running and it would have made it clearer as to what was going on (I know a few people didn't get it)

Although when I put the music (made in garage band for the ipad) and sound effects together in it made me smile. I heard it go a big laugh so it's all good in the end.

I pretty much just allowed myself one day to get it done since I'm at the business end of trying to finish off this videoclip. Hopefully my next post will be about the clip

Anywho I'm jumping the gun a bit. Before I left I hammered out this animation for loopdeloop in about 3 hours

Basically I had finished packing and I had a spare few hours and the deadline was that night so I came up with this short. The theme was 'spooky' and this is something that really bugs me(scares the crap out of me) when in a horror/suspense film a character walks backwards down a dark corridor.

"I KNOW SOMETHING IS GOING TO JUMP OUT JUST DO IT ALL READY!!"

I hand drew all the animation frames and background in separate layers on my scribble pad (10x15cm white pad). The wall was a google image search wall. I scanned and cleaned the drawings and set them up in photoshop and then brought them into toonboom animate. I also for the first time imported the images and vectorised them and I was very surprised by how clean toonboom handled that. Once I timed out the animation I added some after effects gloss to punch a little more mood into the animation. I then hit my 'Existence' sound folder for the sound track.

Next months loopdeloop theme is 'Condoms' to tie in with World Aids Day on December 1st. I'm wondering what to do with that one haha

The day after I made this loop Roseline and I were on a boat headed to the WA holiday island Rottnest. Named after these guys who inhabit the island which they thought to be rats ('Ratnest')

These bros aren't rats though. They are quokkas and they are so gentle and innocent. I've never met such a mellow wild animal before. They were very cool

Also what was cool was how beautiful the beaches were.

Our beaches in WA are really something special. It's only when I go away and visit say Hobart with it's dirt grey sand and ice waters or St Kilda in Melbourne with it's polluted smelly waters and beaches that I realise how lucky we are over here... although I should point out the first day we were there all the beaches were locked down due to a shark attack and we had shark hunting helicopters flying all over the island.. SO THERE'S THAT...haha

What was great was we hired bikes (as there are very few cars on the island) and rode around the whole island. I haven't been on a bike in years and boyyy it took some getting used to and awww man there were some hurt muscles that haven't been used in years. It was good to feel that pain again since the last few years I've been trapped trying to make this animation thing work. Roseline has done a better job at keeping her fitness up (she killed me on the bikes) and I only seem to get a good walk in every now and then. A lot of my friends do the gym thing but that isn't for me. I definitely have to work and keep up my fitness though. I've been having the worst kind of trouble with my back over the last few years and honestly once your back goes animation is the hardest thing in the world.

Well enough old man Merks gripes. While I was over there I found some time to get some drawings in. I posted a bunch of these on my twitter (facebook and g+ as well) via my xperia play smart phone which was a new fun experience. My younger self loves all this new technology. I'd love to travel back and show the super mario world game that awed me as a kid that I can now play on my portable phone I carry in my pocket. I did at one stage flirt with being a purist, antitech, prefer it all original person but seriously this stuff is amazing. Take a smart phone, how many minds, how much history, evolution and genius is behind the technology it floors me.

Enough with the words here's some of the pictures I drew

I wanted to do more studies of the environment but I was enjoying just being there. Roseline has done a whole bunch of great ones and a lot of the time I just loved watching her work

This was her late at night doing a water colour pass on a sketch she had done.

I wanted to loosen up my drawing arm and draw some full scenes. I only drew 2 pictures but I'm pretty pleased with them.
I drew that last mountain scene picture at the dome cafe on the last day we were there. 2 cups of coffee (you can see some coffee stains at the bottom) and a whole bunch of time to spend on it. I thought of it as a platform game and just started from the bottom left and worked up.

and one last scribble featuring the Bacon Bros
Well the rest was great and as soon as we returned home we had work phone calls and emails immediately to take care of. It's good to be a busy freelancer I guess but dang that Quokka life looks appealing.mrmerkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00979216894917693956noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29406115.post-4730472951148750082011-10-13T00:54:00.001+08:002011-10-13T10:20:14.779+08:00Big Hair and Red TieWhoa I haven't updated in awhile so here's a quick drawing I did tonight.

I've been really busy lately trying to do both animation on a short film and a video clip storyboard.

I also had a really bad neck sprain (or something) that put me out for a week and has made all my deadlines harder. I've haven't really recovered from it as my arm and neck still aches a bit which sucks a lot.

I really need a holiday and go get some decent exercise. I'm like an animation battery hen at the moment.

Oh another thing I'm doing is contributing cool stuff I find to the very fantastic Fruitless Pursuits blog. The blogs filled with funny and interesting nerd/art/culture stuff and it's updated quite frequently every day. So definitely check it out. You will enjoy wasting time there.
I spent the afternoon at Perth zoo drawing the birds that poop a lot with Roseline. We also checked on the Red Pandas and the Otters.
Just a late night photoshop illustration. I really like the colours and the style. The head is probably too big though. I added a grain to get rid of the banding on the background gradient, but it gave a nice overall texture to the illustration.

Anyway I'm busy working on a few projects but I'm going to try and do a few more illustrations because it relaxes me.mrmerkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00979216894917693956noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29406115.post-17864128972989169652011-08-26T12:32:00.004+08:002011-08-26T18:07:51.074+08:00Bacon Bros! They are the bros of Bacon, squats and the beach
Bacon Bros came about when I was out eating breakfast with Roseline.

They made me laugh so I made them my loopdeloop animation for this month. The loopdeloop theme was 'masks' and that cracked me up that they were these masked guys that eat bacon and do squats on the beach.

The animation was done once again with a toonboom photoshop combination. I used toonbooms textured brush for the linework to make it look like pencil work. This works pretty well (as an end result) but you sometimes have to go over a line to darken it and I also suffered losing real time playback (this also could have been due to the photoshop background and some effects that I had going on)

The first bacon bro looks a bit like the original (I just forced his proportions a bit) the second one I wanted to make a little bit stranger mostly because I didn't want to animate the same thing twice

I did choose the most conservative one out of the 3. Mostly because I liked the moustache.

The little bit of music was done once again using Garage band for the ipad but all the sound effects and voices were from my film 'Existence' sound library. Adrian Tolman (my go to sound guy) recorded a ridiculous amount of sound effects that I've been having fun misusing for all my stupid animations of late.

Well I hope you got your funk on and now want to eat bacon (there's vegetarian bacon I've been told), do some squats (there's vegetarian squats as well) and maybe even take a walk on the beach.

I wonder what I'll animate next month... and if it will also have nipples on the characters.mrmerkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00979216894917693956noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29406115.post-11881008447705629762011-08-14T23:37:00.001+08:002011-08-14T23:37:58.297+08:00Zoo day 6: With a little colourRoseline and I went to the Zoo this afternoon. It was a nice day out as the rain stayed away.
I didn't draw all that much but I decided to add some quick splashes of photoshop colouring to make up for my lack of work.

I made this yesterday for the website loopdeloop. Looopdeloop is a monthly challenge by word (this months word was 'monster') website to create an animation loop.

I made the silly tune and voice in Garageband for the iPad (I honestly just randomly pressed buttons). Then I drew the whole scene in photoshop with the exception of the squid girls hand and the dancing monster dude. The monster dude and the squid girl hand was animated in toonboom using a textured brush (looks quite nice). I added a few effects in toonboom like adding a tone to the monster and making his jelly body see through and glowing a little. I was able to add a little focal depth and parallax to the background that I might be over using but dam it looks good.

Once all the toonboom stuff was done I pulled it into after effects and pushed those lazers a bit and added a blur and a dark circle mask to the edges.

annnnnd tada! A day spent animating something stupidmrmerkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00979216894917693956noreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29406115.post-68367010643636090912011-07-18T23:22:00.001+08:002011-07-18T23:43:15.064+08:00animation in 48 hours? So last weekend was WAMBAM, a 48hour competition run by Wanimate to produce a short animated cartoon based on 3 words.

My team from last year was sick, busy and interstate. This was the film we made last year

So this year I decided to try and make a film by myself using toonboom.

I did have a story idea that Rose and I were kicking around for the operahouse Graphic competition and I thought what the hey, "2 birds one stone" and they even shared the same deadline. Both had theme words the Graphic comp had the words 'escape' and wambam had three words 'photograph, blue and love'.

So here's the film (it looks pretty great at 1080 over on youtube)

now here's how it all went down...

On friday night I was late to the event where the words were drawn (the event happened in Joondalup which is nearly an hour and a half drive from my house. As far north as our freeway goes). So I missed all the speeches and the organisation of groups. I could have joined a group which was an all female team but I kind of liked that they were an all female team and I wanted to see what they came up with. I was also thinking about this 'graphic comp' and since I was late I didn't want to try to take over another group and push them in that direction.

So I got my three words and I thought about the story Rose and I came up with and how the words could fit into it. The original idea was there were 2 soldiers in a 'terminator judgement day future'. One was a girl and one was a cat. They fight their way to a time machine and travel back into the past but they inhabit their past selves bodies. So the girl becomes herself as a baby (the baby was based on Roseline's niece 'Sophie') and the cat soldier as a devolved cat (based on a stray cat that we looked after in Hobart named 'Milky'). The idea is they still have the same memories just not the intelligence or the same motor controls as their future selves.

The graphic comp had a time limit of 30 seconds so the main story was they teleport back in time into their new bodies inside of a cot (which looks like a prison at first) but so does the nemesis that was chasing them who inhabits a teddy bear. They're trapped with the teddy-nemesis and they struggle to escape the cot (being the comedy).

Now since I had to work the three words into this story "Blue, photograph and love" it actually helped a lot in the shaping of the story. I'd use blue to stylise my colour pallet, photograph meant the girl became a war photographer (added some depth to her character) and love... This actually is what gave the idea heart. They're escaping a holocaust where everyone has been killed or is running for their lives so if the girl is transported back in time and she see a lost parent, that would be a pretty moving experience.

So on that friday I had got the ideas together and I started doing some scribble ideas of design, shots and backgrounds. here's a few

One good thing about working by myself and is that I didn't have to explain jokes like some of the other teams around me were doing (this was the ONLY positive thing) and could jump right into those designs. I really liked the cats gun, it was sort of a tetris block. I was able to use that city scribble as the final design.

So with all my basics done I decided to take the long trip home (yeah I'm going to go on and on about how far it is haha). When I got home I decided to give myself a head start and draw up my backgrounds in photoshop. I was working a bit too slow on these and only got 3 done.

As I was drawing them I thought what if I used toonboom to animate in. The computers at the event had the adobe suites so I could have used them and animated in flash but I thought this would give me a good chance to skill up and play a bit more with toonboom animate pro.

My computer case is a small black box that is quite portable (it's been great when I have been travelling across Australia working) my cintiq 21 is not. There were wacoms to use there so I thought just bring my computer case over plug in and BAM! I'm away and animating.....

and....

....for some reason I could not get toonboom (and just toonboom, photoshop and flash were ok) to recognise the wacom tablet, which meant no pen pressure. I wasted over an hour trying to reinstall the wacom drivers but I couldn't win. Eff it I've wasted too much time I have to start animating and of course my first shot got over worked (animators know what I'm talking about) and a lot of time was wasted. It was that satellite image of Perth exploding (my Akira and Perth tribute).

At this point it was evening and I jumped right into the next shot. This came together really well. Doing multiplane setups in toonboom animate pro is the best!! It looks hot and the focus effect blends the colours perfectly. The animation is a bit hard to see but I thought on a projector it would work really well. I did mean to add in flashing arrows above the characters but I forgot. I tried to render that scene but it looked like it was going to take awhile so I decided to head home earlier and continue working on scenes and try to make up for wasting time getting the wacom to work.

An hour and a half later I'm home (haha I can't let it go) and I'm digging under my table and reconnecting all the unplugged usb cords (I have no idea why there is so many), thankfully everything works fine. Toonboom likes my cintiq and pen pressure is back. At this point I decided that all the future scenes would be done in toonboom and the past scenes would be done in flash (how's that for a subtle opinion? haha) that meant I could do the toonboom stuff at home and then use the 'event computers' to do the last half of the story. I was able to finish one more shot (the landing behind the box and firing focus pull scene) and then decided to call it a night. I set my alarm for 8am the next day.

The next day, the final day for the competitions I was up working on the last shot that I would do in toonboom. It started out all right but then it fell apart. I couldn't get the timing or the movement to work right, I had somehow forgotten how to animate. It's a form of writers block, it's a bitch when it happens and you just have to power through it and rely on techniques. It does cost time though and time wasn't something I had. that shot took till about 2pm so I was pretty screwed at this point and I had to think about how I was going to wrap the story up with the minimal amount of animation.

The second part of the story I had some loose boards that Rose drew when we were planning to enter the graphic comp.

Rose had over the weekend cleaned up a few of the drawings so looking at what I had I decided to end the film as I did. It wasn't great but it was done

A few 11th hour computer problems (that's just a given) but animation is all done at 4:30pm and everything is in premiere with a very rushed sound mix... Now to get it out of premiere

I've used premiere enough to know all the work arounds and I don't hate on it as much as my friends do (with the exception of that cs one that had the flash file memory leak) but I just had all kinds of crazy problems with the exporting. It randomly changing the frame width and height being my main problem, but lots of messing around and all I ended up with was an HD mp4

It is now 5:45pm I'm not going to be able to have my film there in time for the 6pm WAMBAM deadline since Joondalup is....ok ok I'll let it go.

I wanted to at least make the screening and see what everyone else made (there were some great groups so I was pretty excited) so as I was leaving home I set the film uploading to youtube and drove over to Roseline's house to bring her along. It of course took too long to head out to Roseline's place (no luck today) and we quickly made our way off the Joondalup (sigh)... there was something nagging me...something I was meant to do. We reached Joondalup and there was roadworks and a detour. We then get lost into that black hole of a suburb.... DAM YOU JOONDALUP!

We finally work out where we are and reach the college that the event is at. This is one of those colleges that is environmentally conscious and doesn't waste electricity... IT WAS EFFIN DARK THERE!!! Rose and I walked around for awhile, but we were there very late and we were starting to see people look like they were leaving the screening so we gave up (also since Rose was recovering from a bad flu, I didn't want her getting too cold) and decided to go home.

Rose saw I was feeling a bit down so she said that we should go check out the latest Harry Potter movie. I thought that sounded like a good idea... I still couldn't shake the feeling I was forgetting something. We went to the Inaloo cinemas and grabbed something to eat at retro Bettys. While we were sitting there I remembered what I forgot. The dang Graphic competition! I tried with my new phone to work out how to submit my film (all I know what to do on my phone is play sims 3 and take photos and tweet them) but I was dammed if I could work it out. Well no big deal... after the movie I'll submit it at Roseline's place on her computer.

Harry Potter... that movie was crazy. The wizard war thing was mental. Giant spiders, stone statues come to life, giant ogre things, wizards doing the pew pew with their wands. I've always found it funny in Harry Potter everyone is amazed when they do magic or when they watch people who do magic. It never comes natural to anyone, it's always "Holy shit I can do magic!" "Whoa you totally did magic!". Also all the magic is pretty impractical, there's a scene at the end that sums up the entire Potter world (don't worry it's not a spoiler) with this guy trying to sweep up a giant amount of rubble with a normal broom. hah it will probably make more sense when you see the scene. It was enjoyable though and great to complete the Potter films.

After the movie we get back to Roseline's place and I decide to check the graphic comp andddddd I have missed the deadline. 11:58pm sydney time. DOHHHHHHH! So I killed myself all this weekend and missed both competitions.

hahaha goddamit oh well. I made something new and there's some ideas in there that Rose and I are thinking of developing. So not a complete loss but definitely not a win either. So no birds but something that looks like a stone.

Well that was my adventurous weekend of animation...
...
...
...
...and Joondalup.... we are not brosmrmerkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00979216894917693956noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29406115.post-52894244036706977222011-07-12T23:41:00.001+08:002011-07-12T23:41:37.962+08:00IF: Stay

This was a tiny scribble sitting on my desktop for over 2 weeks that I'm not sure why I didn't just bin (it was seriously just the cats head and hand) but I had to finish it.

It feels like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders. Which is hilarious considering how small and stupid the picture is hahamrmerkshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00979216894917693956noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-29406115.post-60926545364719178562011-07-08T17:27:00.000+08:002011-07-08T17:27:04.268+08:00IF: Remedy

There were 9 spotted dog puppies running around today. Terribly cute and hard to work out how to draw. Most of my drawings look like rats haha

These Rhino's were a bit annoyed and were running around. I was struggling trying to work out how to draw them and capture the angry face and then they just dropped to the ground and went to sleep with their ass pointed at me... You win this round Rhino's!
Rose loves this little bird on the right. He's terribly cute and gets excited when people come and see him. Not many people go into the bird section since it's either being reworked or neglected. There's only 3 pretty awesome Macaws and a few other birds there so it looks a bit lonely for the little guy.

I decided to draw in the background for these two scribbles. The top one is a cheetah in the grass chewing on a steak. An amazing creature! The bottom one is another Macaw who comes right up to you. The colours are so bright and happy (that doesn't translate well using a felt tip pen)

Well sorry that this blog has been a bit neglected as I've been busy working and doing a webcomic over at http://merks-comics.blogspot.com/

The comic is mostly about the videogames I play but I change it up a bit every now and then.

I also have a lot of art on my newish facebook page. If you click the like button it should keep you up to date with my comics and any new stuff that I do.
